After
installing a variety of shift knobs in all my BMWs over the
years, I had gotten used to the standard-size scale to which
all knobs are built (not even counting the tiny knobs that are
available!). What this means is that I had gotten used
to having a knob that was just too darn small for my big
hands..
So I did something about it.
I
took a standard UUC "Rob Knob" and enlarged the
width dimension about 10% and adjusting the scale to maintain
the same height, creating the RK MAGNUM shift knob out of 6061
aluminum. To make things even more interesting, I made a
quantity of them in 303 stainless steel. This
version is officially known as the RK MAGNUM SS.
The differences in weight are dramatic:
| knob |
weight |
| BMW illuminated knob |
3.4oz |
| RK II - aluminum |
7.1oz |
| RK II - titanium |
11.7oz |
| RK MAGNUM - aluminum |
9.4oz |
| RK MAGNUM SS |
27.6oz |
Shifting is liquidy-smooth and the heavy weight makes the
shifter feel "powerful". I doubt this knob
will come off any time soon.
